cork tile flooring is similar to floorboard but with additional benefits such as insulation against noise and temperature. cork tile flooring is considered the perfect flooring solution because it is easy to maintain, pleasing to the eye, comfortable to walk on, soft and warm, keeps the noise out, insulates against temperature, and yet is rough and tough.

cork tile flooring comes in a variety of hues from natural browns and beiges to greens, reds, and even black. These multi-faceted tiles come with their own unique speckles and whorls and blend in easily with the décor, no matter what the type.

cork tile flooring was used in the old times but is now making a major reappearance not only because it is fashionable, but also because it is an environmentally friendly product that doesn’t require the cutting of trees. The bark is harvested once every nine years in accordance with strict harvesting standards, giving the trees time to regenerate themselves, when they will be ready for harvest again.

cork tile flooring has all the benefits of natural cork products: resilient, anti-static, sound absorbing, water resistant, insulating, and anti-allergenic.

Cork tiles can be used in any room of the house or office. They are a favorite choice in sound recording studios because they support acoustical excellence and prevent an echo. cork tile flooring is also resistant to friction and, therefore, long lasting; it provides the soft underfoot and insulation against heat and cold. The flooring is capable of “impact sound reduction” and “sound transmission reduction”. Cork floor tiles are priced in the same range as hardwood.

There are two types of tiles in popular usage these days. One is the “glue down” tile, which is the standard type, usually twelve square inches and four millimeters thick. They are available is bigger sizes, with or without beveled edges and in an array of shapes to chose from.

The second type of cork floor plan is the “floating cork floor plank”. These tiles are similar to laminated wood flooring planks. The former consists of a cork base that is typically two millimeters thick, MDF fiberboard at the core and a three-millimeter cork surface layer in a range of patterns. These tiles are bought pre-finished with three coats of UV-protected polyurethane. The installation procedure is the same as that of a laminate floor. The choice of glue used in the installation is of utmost importance. Cork tiles expand and contract with changes in humidity. The soft and flexible nature of cork does not require a flexible adhesive, but a strong one, which will ensure that a permanent bond is created.

Tiles and laminated flooring are becoming a preference these days. These are chosen over similar products because it is economical and gives out the same effect as their counterparts.

Laminate or tile flooring needs some care and attention for it to last a lifetime. Although cleaning these types of flooring is as easy as pie, there are still some things to consider and to remember before proceeding with cleaning it.

Here are the things you should do or not do when cleaning laminated or tiled floors.

1. Never wax nor polish the floor. Some waxes have ingredients that could destroy the outer layers of the tile. This layer is its protective layer against dust and moisture. If it is removed, then dirt could creep in and stick.

2. Vacuum will do for normal cleaning. For your everyday cleaning requirements, you would just need to vacuum the laminated floor or tile and that’s it. Sweeping should always be done prior to vacuuming.

3. Use a mop with soft cloth. So as not to scratch the surface, always use mops with soft materials attached to it. Also, make sure the mop is not dripping. Always wring it out because excessive water is not necessary.

4. Do not use abrasive cleaners, scrubbing pads, or scouring powder. As stated earlier, laminated floors have protective coverings. Abrasive materials will not help clean the floor, it would ruin it.

5. Use floor protectors or pads under furniture legs, especially chairs. Chairs are always moved from place to place. Always check if the furniture legs and chairs are not causing scratches on the floor.

6. Place doormats at entryways. Doormats would collect dirt and grit stuck in the shoes. It would also absorb moisture off it. Placing one on every door is a good idea so that people coming in won’t leave irremovable dirt sticking to the floor.

7. Use only recommended cleaners for your laminated floors and tiles. Each manufacturer will suggest to you a cleaner that works well with their products. It is a smart idea to go with these cleaners than to try others that could be harmful to the floor.

8. Learn how to use flooring touch-up kits. There are repair kits available for tiles and laminated flooring. Better know how to use it so that minor problems can be easily repaired before it become worse.

9. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when replacing a single board. There are times that the damage on your floor cannot be repaired and replacing the whole board is necessary. When doing so, check out what the manufacturer’s instructions are. If you are not sure about it, better ask a professional to do the job.

10. Keep your warranty. Laminate floors and tiles have manufacturer’s warranties upon installation. These would ensure that your floor is protected from any defects and would perform to the maximum. Always conform to the warranty conditions.

These are few ways you can do to lengthen the lifespan of your laminated floors and tiles. Although these can be easily replaced and is relatively cheaper, it is not wise to just let it be and not take care of it.

Your home will look new and appealing if its floor is clean and well-maintained. Always leave a good impression with your guests. Start with a shiny, beautiful floor!

Feel free to contact us if you feel that there is content in todays article that could be found inaccurate or misleading. Here is the reference for your use: "Firm Footing: Slate Tile Flooring".

Some of the simplest materials used in flooring are those which require little alteration from their natural form. To this, it can be said that the earth itself is often the most reliable manufacturers of tile flooring you can name. One particular variety of natural stone flooring that is becoming more and more popular is slate. The popularity of slate tile can be attributed to many factors, although versatility of slate tile is certainly one of the more obvious ones. Slate tile can be used practically anywhere from a kitchen, to a front hallway, to a bathroom, and in outdoor uses such as pool surrounds and patio tile. In addition to this versatility, slate features one of the most naturally slip-resistant surfaces available. For areas where this is important – in the front entrance way of a commercial or public property, or in a bathroom where wetness is expected, for instance – slate delivers one of the most durable and decorative surfaces available, as well as being a highly practical surface to greatly reduce the possibility of slipping on your floor. So, as you can see, slate tile flooring certainly offers a wide range of advantages. But where does slate come from exactly, and how is it prepared for use as tile?

Origins and nature of slate

Slate is found in large deposits most commonly concentrated in continental coastal regions. These areas are where ancient oceans collected silt and other mineral elements which remain long after these oceans have receded. The material elements left behind in these former ocean beds - soil, clay and other random minerals - are exposed to tremendous pressures and heat over the course of millennia. The heat and pressure to which these materials are subject forge them into a rugged, naturally durable stone we recognize as slate. The minerals that are often found in slate – quartz, mica, chlorite, and others – act as stabilizing agents, allowing the slate to be very resistant to all kinds of stresses. This mixture of random materials explains the naturally varied hues from tile to tile, given that the mineral content in the stone will be equally varied. The harsh beginnings of slate tile makes for a very durable, and visually striking material that is highly suitable for flooring for an inside or outside project.

Gauge and calibration of slate tile flooring

In addition to being durable and decorative, slate tiles are often designed to be easy to work with for an experienced tile installer as well. It is important to many manufacturers to make installing slate tile as simple a process as is possible for a material that remains largely unchanged from its natural state. Two of the processes that allows this is gauge and calibration of the slate tile. Gauge refers to a process whereby the edges of the slate tile are made square by precision cutting. This simple process allows the slate tile to be an interlocking material that will be more easily interlocked with other tiles. In addition, the process of calibration involves making the back of the slate tile as even as possible by means of machine-honing it to be smooth or ribbed depending on type. The process of calibration is important in making sure that the slate tile will lay flat when installed. This too is designed for ease of installation, as well as a positive result in terms of an even walking surface.

Split-face slate tile flooring

One of the most popular choices in slate tile flooring is the natural face, or split-face slate tile. The “split” in split-face refers to where the slate has been removed, or split, from the slate bed. Therefore, this variety of slate tile maintains the natural, unevenly textured surface that makes slate tile distinct from other varieties of natural stone. Split-face slate tile flooring is also one of the best choices you can make if you are looking for a slip-resistant surface. Also, this type of slate tile flooring has a tactile dimension all of its own, adding a sensuous character to a slate tile floor that is an additional feature to the rich color.

Color variation in slate tile flooring and the “dry run”

As it has been mentioned earlier, slate is made up of random elements, and there are natural color variations to be expected in every batch of slate tile. No slate tile floor is identical to any other. If you’re looking for a chance to let your designer’s eye guide your flooring project, you will have made a great choice in slate tile flooring. Once you’ve ordered your slate tile and you’ve had the batch delivered, it is a good idea to open all of the boxes to see the range of color that is unique to your shipment. Once again, no slate tile flooring project is the same as the next, so this is your chance to explore the layout possibilities in a “dry run”. This involves laying out your slate tile without applying the mortar, to help you get the best visual result. The natural variations from tile to tile in this sense is a significant advantage to the overall effect your slate tile flooring project will have on your interior or exterior. This “dry run”, and the opening of all boxes you get, will also help you in the case of thickness variation in the slate tile as well.

Thickness variation in slate tile flooring

It must be noted that there will often be a thickness variation from tile to tile. It’s a good idea to discuss this with your local flooring professionals, or your slate tile sales rep. They can often be helpful to you when you are thinking of using slate, but are uncertain about some of these details that characterize natural stone surfaces. The thickness variation is often presented in a range of 3/8”-7/16”, for instance. Again, your sales rep or other flooring professional can help you with the specifics of your chosen line of slate tile flooring.

Slate tile flooring adds strength and class

The popular use of slate tile flooring in many areas of residential and commercial interiors and exteriors is a tribute to it’s versatility and aesthetic value. With its distinctive surface, ease of installation and workability, decorative color variation, and its natural slip-resistance that makes it a great choice for practicality and look. With slate, you’re always have firm footing!

Slate tile flooring do’s and don’ts

Do:

Consider the area in which you wish to install your slate tile flooring and be sure that the type of slate you choose to buy is appropriate with regard to climate, foot traffic, and any other pertinent factors.

Consider the substrate over which you will install your slate tile, and make sure that it is suitable for your specific choice. Always ask your sales rep about the suitability of your substrate in relation to the slate tile product you buy

Expect color variations, and use them to your advantage when approaching the layout of your slate tile.

Read all warranty information provided, and any other instructions or information pertinent to your slate tile flooring purchase

Layout your slate tile flooring in a dry run, and test the color patterns, thickness variation, and overall spacing of your particular batch of slate

Use a type of mortar for slate tile that is conducive to your interior or exterior installation. Seek advice from sales reps as to specific brands and varieties of mortar and always read the instructions on any products you buy

Choose a appropriate slate tile flooring sealant. Some varieties you might consider are high-gloss (which gives your slate tile a lustrous “wet look”), low sheen (which is reflective, but not as shiny as high-gloss), or no sheen, sometimes known as natural finish. The look that these finishes provide are down to taste, but (once again) it’s a good idea to make sure that your sealant is suitable for slate tile

Hire an experienced flooring professional if you don’t have experience in laying slate tile yourself. This can help you to avoid costly mistakes

Don’t:

Forget to allow for breakage and waste when you place your order. Accidents can happen, both in transit and on the job site

Use slate tile as a paver on sand. Slate tile must be installed on a solid substrate with mortar

Fail to inspect your substrate for loose materials or dirt. It is important to have a clear, clean and level substrate for a slate tile flooring installation

Install slate tile flooring on a wet surface. Despite the resilient nature of slate, trapped moisture remains to be something to be avoided in any installation

Apply a sealer to a slate tile floor that has been waxed or oiled but has not yet cured. The resulting marks left by walking on a slate tile floor that hasn’t cured can be difficult to remove later

Begin grouting too soon. It’s a good idea to wait at least a day before grouting your slate tile in order to allow the mortar to properly set.

Forget to use safety goggles and other equipment when cutting slate tile
________________________________________________________________

Believe it or not, carpeting is one of the biggest contributors to indoor air pollution.

One of the commonest health problems in a house is allergies, and carpets are practically a perfect environment for dust mites, molds and mildew. Not only that, but the modern wall-to wall carpeting in today’s houses are made of synthetic fibers dyed and treated with chemicals (fungicides, soil repellants and pesticides, anyone?) and bonded to synthetic backing with chemical glues. All of these materials release hundreds of Volatile Organic Compounds as they age, in a process called outgassing. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can be mutagens, irritants and carcinogens. Not the ideal thing to have in your home, to say the least.

Carpet also attracts and retains all that you and your family members track in to the house from the ground outside- dirt, lead dust found in flaking house exterior paint, insects, bacteria, lawn and garden chemicals and other unhealthy debris. Not to mention food crumbs, hair and dead skin particles. Getting a wall-to-wall carpet 100% clean is nearly impossible (ever rented one of those steam-cleaners to clean your carpet and cleaned the same area over and over, each time seeing more dirt come out?) and trying to clean causes its own problems. Vacuuming stirs up airborne dust and mold spores. Shampooing can leave a damp carpet encouraging more mold growth and even the shampoo may have irritating or even toxic chemicals added.

At the other end of the floor covering health spectrum is ceramic tile. It is made from natural clay materials fired in a kiln. A tile sealed with non-leaded glaze is impervious to mold and bacteria and is well tolerated by chemically sensitive people. Ceramic tile is bonded to the base flooring using low-toxicity thin set mortar, and can be grouted with home-made, additive-free grout. 2 parts dry, clean sand mixed with 1 part Portland cement can be prepared and added to water to form a slow, damp curing grout.

Although a ceramic tile floor can be expensive up front, due to the labor-intensive installation, they are very durable and long-lasting if properly maintained, and can be considered as comparatively affordable in the long run.

It is inevitable, almost everyone no matter how long they have lived in their house, wants to replace their flooring at some point. Do you have carpet that is covered in pet stains, juice, coffee or wine stains? Carpet gets matted down and shows wear patterns quickly. Alternatively, maybe you have hardwood floors that are full of scratches and dents. Linoleum that is peeling up at the edges and seams and has rips and tears in it.

No matter what type of flooring you currently have. If you are not happy with what you are walking on, it can reduce the value and appearance of your home dramatically. If you are considering a new floor, you owe it to yourself to look into cork flooring as an option.

What Is Cork Flooring?

Cork has been used in a variety of capacities for thousands of years including flooring. Because of all of the wonderful properties found naturally in cork, it is a perfect choice for flooring, sound proofing, and of course in wine bottles.

Cork is taken from the bark of the cork oak tree. The cork can be harvested after the tree is 25 years of age. And after that, the tree can be harvested every nine years for the rest of the lifetime. In addition, since each cork oak tree can live to be over two hundred years old, cork is a renewable resource, making it an excellent option for environmentally conscious consumers.

How Durable Is Cork?

When you think of cork, you may think immediately of wine corks or small cork plugs that are used to plug bottles of all shapes and sizes. You may have had the experience of a cork used in a wine bottle breaking off into your wine. If this has happened to you, you might be wondering if cork really is strong enough for a flooring option.

The answer is a resounding yes! In fact, cork is probably one of the strongest flooring options available on the market today! Cork is much less affected by impact and friction than hardwood, laminate or tile flooring. Therefore, cork can stand up to much more use and abuse than any other flooring type.

In fact, cork has an amazing resistant and is extremely resilient to pressure. If you stand on a cork floor with high heels, the floor will make an impression or a dent. However, when you remove the pressure, the floor will spring back to its original shape almost immediately, and leave no lasting mark or impression! This is handy if you plan to place any heavy furniture on your floor. With other types of flooring such as carpet, heavy furniture will leave a permanent mark when it is moved. However with cork, when you remove the furniture, the floor with look as good as new.

When you drop heavy items on tile floors, they are prone to cracking and breaking. However, with a cork floor, the item will not leave a mark. This is an excellent property if you have small children or are just clumsy!

What About Water?

Cork contains a natural substance called suberin. Suberin is a waxy type of substance that makes the cork impervious to liquids and the cork will not rot if it is exposed to water or liquid like a hardwood or laminate. This makes cork flooring a perfect choice for kitchens or bathroom areas. Cork is the best seal around which is evidenced by the use of cork to stop up wine bottles for centuries.

If you spill anything on a cork floor, you do not have to worry about staining or any other damage, you simply wipe it up, and the mess is gone. Unlike carpet or hardwood where you would have to worry about a permanent stain or discoloration of the floor.

What Other Properties Does Cork Have?

Cork is the perfect choice if you suffer from allergies or if you have an illness that requires your living environment to be very clean. Because cork is a natural barrier to insects, common problem insects such as termites and ants cannot get into the flooring and infest the house.

In addition, cork is naturally germ resistant which means that no allergens can hid in the floor such as with carpet. The floor will not absorb dust or allow any molds or funguses to grow. It is easy to clean and is not produced with any harsh chemicals, which makes it the perfect choice for people suffering with allergies or any major illness.

Can I Install It Myself?

If you are a do it yourselfer and you like home projects, than cork is definitely something that you can install over a weekend. Many manufactures are now producing cork-flooring tiles with a glue-less technology. You simply snap the tiles in place like a floating floor. This makes the installation easy and it does not require any special tools.

The Final Decision

Cork is the perfect choice for flooring if you need something that will stand up to use and abuse, be long lasting, is resistant to water and stains and be safe for the environment. An excellent value for your money, cork will last forever and is only half the price of many other popular flooring options.

Ceramic Tile brings a texture, richness and color to a room that Linoleum has yet to truly mimic. Tile floors can be installed in any room, however they are most frequently seen in Bathrooms and Kitchens. I particularly like them in entryways, where they serve as a transition point from the outside to large carpeted or hardwood floored rooms. They make for easy clean up and are impervious to water damage.

Tile Types

Ceramic tiles come in two basic types. Glazed and Porcelain. Glazed holds up the best for heavy traffic areas and porcelain works well in bathrooms. Porcelain is typically more expensive, so consider your budget and the size of the area you want to tile. Tiles also come in many shapes and sizes. For flooring, however, I would suggest using larger tiles up to 12” x 12”.

Underlayment

For proper installation the base foundation or the underlayment is critical. Typically it consists of ¾” to 1 ¼” of plywood. Tiling over Linoleum or existing tile is also feasible, as long as it is solid. I also recommend when Tiling over Linoleum that you first apply ring nails or screws 6” on center over the entire area. Tiles can also be installed directly over Concrete. Make sure in all cases that the floor is level and free of dust and debris prior to installation. There are leveling compounds that you can apply before applying tile if necessary.

Preparing the Site

Before actually installing the tile, it is best to lay it out in the room to see how it will look. Pay close attention to how it runs out toward the walls, in the corners and next to cabinets, tubs and toilets. The trick is to lay the tile out such that stubby tiles do not show up in highly visible spots. Once you have completed this, make two marks with a pencil outlining the most centered tile. These lines should be perpendicular to each other. Also take note of the wall that is most visible from all the others. Now remove the tiles. Next draw or snap a line perpendicular to this wall that is in line with one of the marks you made on the floor. Then, draw a perpendicular line to this first line. This second line should be centered with the first line and fairly in line with the second mark you made on the floor. Once you have completed this task, re-layout some of the tiles along the perpendicular lines and observe if they run out in a way that will limit cutting and stubbed tiles. Once this is completed, remove the tiles and prepare for the actual installation.

Installing the Tile

Again, make sure the area is free of dirt and dust. Next apply the ceramic adhesive or mastic to the flooring, starting in the center, where the two perpendicular reference lines intersect. Apply enough material to cover 6-10 square feet, if no cuts are required. If cuts are required limit the amount of mastic application to about 2-4 square feet. When applying the mastic, first spread it with the flat end of the trowel. Lay it on relatively thick, approximately 1/8” to 3/16”thick. Then turn the trowel around and run the notched edge over it. This creates ridges in the mastic that helps to hold the tile down more securely. The larger the tile, the larger the notches should be. For example, I use a ¼” notched trowel for 12” x 12” tiles.

Note: Only make up enough ceramic adhesive for 30 minutes, as this material has the tendency to harden up rather quickly.

Once the adhesive has been applied, begin installing the tiles working from the center outward. On larger tiles you should back butter them. Basically, apply a thin coating of mastic to the back of the tile prior to laying it on the floor. This will help ensure a good bond.

As you near the walls or edges of cabinets, tubs and toilets, you will need to cut some of the tiles. I highly recommend the use of a Wet-Saw. A Wet-Saw will allow you to make very accurate cuts, both large and small. You will also save money, as you will waste many fewer tiles with bad cuts or broken tiles. Wet-Saws are not that expensive and once you see your finished product you will certainly be installing more tile. Wet-Saws can also be rented as a cheaper alternative.

When applying Tiles, you may want to use Lugs. Lugs are effectively spacers that come in various thicknesses. I typically like to have no more than a ¼” space between the tiles. Employing Spacers will ensure uniformity with your tile spacing.

Grouting

After the Tile has been completely installed, allow it to sit for 24-48 hours before applying grout and walking on it. Grout comes in many different colors and is very easy to install. Simply mix the grout with water or a special bonding agent and apply with a rubber trowel. Run the trowel on a bias when going over tile corners.

Once the grout has been applied, immediately wipe the tile of excess grout, using a wet sponge and a bucket of water. Wait 30 minutes and again wipe the tiles down of any residual grout. Wait another 60 minutes and repeat. If grout is left on the tiles to dry, you will have a great deal of elbow work scraping it off.

Let the grout sit up for 24 hours and it is ready for use and admiration.

Please contact us if you feel that there is anything within todays article that is inaccurate or misleading. Please use the following reference: "Firm Footing: Slate Tile Flooring".

Please contact us if there is anything about todays article you feel is inaccurate or misleading. Here is the reference for your use: "Tips On How To Care For Your Ceramic Tile Floor".

Ceramic tile floors have an awful lot going for them, including a beautiful appearance, and ease of maintenance. But as with all flooring, care is needed to make sure that it lasts a good long time. Fortunately, ceramic tile floors are one of the easiest floors to care for and here are some suggestions to help you do that.

Actually, the best form of care is prevention and constant attention. Of course, floors are going to get dirty from time to time no matter what you do. And ceramic tile floors are no exception. But there are a few things you can do to minimize the frequency of heavy cleaning jobs on your ceramic tile floor.

The first is to practice constant awareness by cleaning up any spills on the floor right away. Don't let them dry on the floor. If you do, they will only attract far more dirt to the floor before you finally get it cleaned up. Also be sure to sweep and dry mop your ceramic floor very often. Dirt that is not allowed to stay on the floor long will not be able to be ground in and become hard to remove. So be vigilant about protecting the floor by sweeping and mopping regularly.

Another helpful idea that can cut down on much of your work and maintenance on a ceramic tile floor is to place mats in strategic locations that are good at catching dirt off the bottom of people's shoes before they walk into the room. It's much easier to clean these mats from time to time than it is to have to sweep and mop your whole ceramic tile floor more regularly. The mats also don't show dirt nearly as much as the floor will.

But despite all your efforts, you will have to do a thorough cleaning of your ceramic tile floor at times. It's probably a good idea to check with your flooring manufacturer's recommendations on what floor cleaner you should use before you get started. There are several all-purpose cleaners on the market that claim to do a great job on ceramic tile floors, but just be sure that you test them out first before using them on the entire floor. Another consideration is to make sure that your tile cleaner is compatible with the grout that was used on your ceramic tile floor as well. Once again, your floor manufacturer can usually help out with the answer to that question too.

For cleaning, first sweep up all loose dirt with a broom or vacuum it. Then mix up your cleanser with warm water. Using a soft cotton mop or sponge mop apply the cleanser solution to the floor. Be careful not to allow the solution to dry on the ceramic tiles, so it's best to do a portion of the floor at a time and rinse the floor often. If the floor is very heavily soiled, you may even have to allow the solution to soak on the floor for a few minutes before mopping or scrubbing it.

If your ceramic tile has a glossy or shiny finish, you may even need to dry it with a soft towel to prevent water spots showing up as the solution dries.

As you can see, ceramic tile floors are not very difficult to care for under any circumstances, but if you take a few extra precautions, and give the floor regular attention, your floor will always look great and will need very little maintenance.
