Refinishing hardwood floors is something that you can do yourself without paying professionals high amounts of money to do it for you. However, you do need to have time to spend on your refinishing project to make sure that you end up with the effect you want to achieve. Many places that rent equipment have the heavy-duty sander that you need for the refinishing job. To start to refinish hardwood floors, you first have to move all the furniture and take up any rugs or mats that you have on the wood floors. You also need to wear a dust mask so that you wonÂ’t breathe in the dust when refinishing hardwood floors.
Older wood floors can be restored to their former glory when you find out how to refinish hardwood floors. There are many books you can buy on the subject of refinishing hardwood floors and you can also get valuable information when you search online. You do need to have a heavy- duty sander that you move gently back and forth over the wood floors. It is best to move in a straight line with the pattern of the hardwood boards instead of going across, especially if the hardwood has a beveled edge with small grooves. You also have to be mindful not to apply more pressure in one place that in another because you could take gouges out of the floor.
Once you have the initial finish sanded off, you have to sweep or vacuum up the dust and give the floor a light washing. This is an important part of refinishing hardwood floors because the least little bit of dust and dirt will show up when you apply the stain and finish. In the information you have about how to refinish wood floors, you will find out that you should only use a damp mop to wash up the floor. Excess water, especially on the sanded hardwood, will cause stains in the floor.
When you dry the floor, then you are ready for the next stage of refinishing hardwood floors. You can choose to stain the wood floor in different colors suited to the type of wood. You may want to leave the wood in its natural color, but when you read about how to refinish hardwood floors, you will also learn about the need for a protective coating. The polyurethane coating adds protection to the floor. You can choose a coating that will give you a gleaming floor or one that has a low luster. When refinishing wood floors, it is essential that the first coat is dry before you apply another coat. The more coats you put on, the shinier your floors will be.
Refinishing wood floors is a time-consuming project. However, it does not mean that you have to move out of the home until you complete the refinishing. The coatings for refinishing hardwood floors do not have any strong fumes that may be dangerous for anyone with respiratory problems. The only thing you have to remember is not to walk on the floor until the finish is dry. If you do, your refinishing project will have your footprints all over it – in more ways than one.

Did you know that you can usually tell the country from which an Oriental rug originated from its design and style? Indian Rugs - Most Oriental rugs sold in the United States nowadays are made in India. The rug industry is one of the mainstays of rural workers in India. Oriental rugs from India are generally less expensive than from other countries. The one rug produced in India that did originate in that country is the traditional Indian dhurrie rug, a flat-weave rug of cotton, wool or other natural fibers created in a variety of traditional and contemporary patterns.
Turkey - Turkish rugs are prized not only for their beauty, but because most Turkish Oriental rugs are between 50 and 75 years old. World War I disrupted the Turkish rug industry, and it has taken nearly 50 years for the industry to begin to regain its footing. The Turkish government now encourages and supports Oriental rug weaving as an industry, and the rugs produced are striking in their rich use of color and traditional design.
Tibet - Tibetan rugs are among the most prized of all rugs. Entire villages and families are involved in the art of Oriental rug design. A Tibetan rug can take up to 3,000 hours to complete. They are made from the wool of Himalayan sheep, which is generally regarded as the best wool fiber for rug making because of its high lanolin content. Tibetan rugs feature rustic patterns and rich colors, with variations in the wool texture and coloring that increase the value and uniqueness of the finished products.

The laminate flooring of today no longer features high-quality photographic paper with an image of wood. The number of knots per square inch may vary from 16 to over 500. Horizontal or vertical looms are used to weave the rugs. Horizontal looms are preferred for weaving smaller rugs while the vertical ones are used for bigger ones. Depending on the quality and size of the rug it may take from only a month to several years to complete.
As Oriental rugs can be a costly affair it is important that you make sure that you are buying an original one. You may make use of experts while buying and some rug dealers also provide a certificate of authentication with their rugs.

Hardwood floors can be secured using various installation methods such as floating, glue-down, nail-down, and staple-down. The ¾ inch solid floors can be nailed down. Adapters are used for thin flooring. The hardwood flooring can be stapled down over wood subfloor. The staple-down method is simpler than nail-down.
Before securing hardwood floors, read the installation instructions provided by manufacturer for the right tools and methods. In glue down installation, the hardwood floor is glued onto the subfloor or cured and dry concrete slabs. Staple-down and nail-down methods are best for solid wood plank floors and solid wood strip floors. Parquet and engineered wood floors can be secured with glue.
Floating is a quick and easy method of floor installation, in which hardwood floors float over different sub floors. The floor is not tied to the subfloor. A slim pad is inserted between subfloor and wood floor. The pad cuts noise level, and protects from moisture. Only groove and tongue of planks are glued together. Floating is used to install longstrip floors.
The flooring should be acclimated in the room where it will be installed. If you are installing during the damp season, keep the wood indoors for minimum of three days. In summers, flooring can be stored in a garage.
Hardwood floors can be installed using four different methods, such as glue-down, nail-down, staple-down and floating. You are advised to read installation instruction carefully.

Believe it or not, carpeting is one of the biggest contributors to indoor air pollution.
One of the commonest health problems in a house is allergies, and carpets are practically a perfect environment for dust mites, molds and mildew. Not only that, but the modern wall-to wall carpeting in todayÂ’s houses are made of synthetic fibers dyed and treated with chemicals (fungicides, soil repellants and pesticides, anyone?) and bonded to synthetic backing with chemical glues. All of these materials release hundreds of Volatile Organic Compounds as they age, in a process called outgassing. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can be mutagens, irritants and carcinogens. Not the ideal thing to have in your home, to say the least.
Carpet also attracts and retains all that you and your family members track in to the house from the ground outside- dirt, lead dust found in flaking house exterior paint, insects, bacteria, lawn and garden chemicals and other unhealthy debris. Not to mention food crumbs, hair and dead skin particles. Getting a wall-to-wall carpet 100% clean is nearly impossible (ever rented one of those steam-cleaners to clean your carpet and cleaned the same area over and over, each time seeing more dirt come out?) and trying to clean causes its own problems. Vacuuming stirs up airborne dust and mold spores. Shampooing can leave a damp carpet encouraging more mold growth and even the shampoo may have irritating or even toxic chemicals added.
At the other end of the floor covering health spectrum is ceramic tile. It is made from natural clay materials fired in a kiln. A tile sealed with non-leaded glaze is impervious to mold and bacteria and is well tolerated by chemically sensitive people. Ceramic tile is bonded to the base flooring using low-toxicity thin set mortar, and can be grouted with home-made, additive-free grout. 2 parts dry, clean sand mixed with 1 part Portland cement can be prepared and added to water to form a slow, damp curing grout.
Although a ceramic tile floor can be expensive up front, due to the labor-intensive installation, they are very durable and long-lasting if properly maintained, and can be considered as comparatively affordable in the long run.

Most people who buy laminate flooring do so because they want hard flooring, but can’t afford wood. But how does laminate flooring compare to wood? Is it a good alternative, or a case of ‘you get what you pay for’?
Well, that depends on whatÂ’s important to you. The biggest advantage of laminate flooring, apart from its attractive price point, is that it is so easy to install: you can do it yourself, quite easily, which is far from the case with wood flooring. Laminate systems tend to be designed like a jigsaw puzzle, to quickly and easily snap together.
Laminate flooring is also often sturdier than wood – it is very hard wearing, to the point where a cheap shop like Ikea can give a much longer guarantee on their laminates than most wood floor shops can. It won’t fade or dent easily.
While itÂ’s no easier to clean that wood, itÂ’s worth mentioning that itÂ’s an awful lot easier to clean laminate that it is to clean carpet, if you were also considering putting that on your floor. Between the quality of wood and the cheapness of laminate, itÂ’s hardly even worth considering carpet as an option these days.
However, there are also quite a few disadvantages to laminate flooring. The first is the look and sound of it: it looks fake, and it sounds hollow. While the sound can be fixed with an underlay, the look will never be as unique as wood, as wood is naturally formed on a tree and every floor is different. Laminate flooring is basically like sticking a bunch of repeating posters to your floor with a picture of some wood on them – hardly the same.
Also, laminate floors will often curl up and get spoiled if you drop water or other liquids on them. This generally makes them unsuitable for bathroom and kitchen use, unless they have been specially treated for it.

Persian rugs can be classified into Persian City Rugs and Persian Tribal Rugs. Each type within these two is normally named after the city or tribal name in which it is manufactured and designed. These are some of the most popular Persian rugs (the first four fall under Persian City Rugs):
Afshar Rugs: These are smaller rugs usually designed with geometric pattern. Multiple connected medallions in diamond shape, All-over gul farangi (roses), botehs, and chicken-like motifs (Afshar-e-Morghi) are the common designs. Colors range from dark red, reddish brown, brown, dark reddish-blue, dark blue, burnt orange, ocher, and camel. The foundation is often wool, but cotton foundation may also be used in some rugs.
Tabriz Rugs: Most of the designs are curvilinear though geometric are also found. The symmetric (Turkish) knot is common with numerous colors used in one rug, and very diverse in palette. The common background and border colors used in this design are pink, peach, camel, beige, and ivory. The overall look of Tabriz rugs is pastel. Motifs may come in an assortment of colors such as blue, green, yellow, orange, and lavender. The foundation is usually silk and wool pile with silk highlights.
Kashan Rugs: About 95% of the Kashan rugs pattern is curvilinear. An elongated diamond-shaped and lobed medallion with floral pendants is a popular traditional design. This design usually has a navy medallion with similar corners and border in a red background or vise versa. Vase, hunting and pictorial are also popular. The common background Kashan rug colors are navy, rich red, beige and ivory. Other colors such as red, blue, turquoise, ocher, beige, white, brown and occasionally green are used for the designs.
Kerman Rugs: These are also mostly curvilinear in pattern. They are famous for Kerman pictorials which fall under the pictorial category of pattern. Traditional Kerman designs include all-over floral, boteh, stripes, paneled garden, prayer, vase, garden, hunting, animal, and pictorials using both Persian and European themes etc. Modern versions consist of Aubussons or Koran (Quran) medallion-and-corners with an open field. Rich red, red-blue, lime green, pink, ivory, gray-blue, turquoise, orange, champagne and beige are some of the colors commonly used.

Wool rugs remain the first choice in durable, soft, dirt-and-fire resistant, warm rugs, but synthetic reproductions make oriental area rugs more affordable. They come in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes – round, oval, rectangular, and, of course, the popular runner.
How to Choose Oriental Rugs for Your Home
Decide on how you are going to use each area rug. Is it going to define furniture groupings or unify all the elements in the room? Is its primary use to protect a floor or a carpet? Is its prime function to add warmth and comfort? The use of the rug will dictate its size and shape. As well, you should keep these points in mind:
· The colors should be harmonious with other colors in the room.
· If the center of the carpet will be visible, medallions or central scenes are good choices, but if the center will be fully or partially hidden under a table or other furniture, it is better to go with a repetitive design or an elaborate and interesting border.
· A family with health problems will appreciate rugs with natural fibers since they have the advantage of not releasing chemicals into the air as synthetics do.
· Very colorful and busy designs can make an oriental rug the focal point in a room, but if the room is already colorful with intricate drapery and upholstery fabric designs, choose simple designs and subtle colors.

It is not as difficult as you may think to find good quality, cheap area rugs with oriental designs. When you shop online, you deal directly with online retailers who can offer discount and warehouse prices because there are no storefront costs and no middlemen to pay. As well as shopping online, here are other considerations that can make the oriental rug of your dreams affordable:
· An antique rug is the most expensive and should have documentation attesting to its authenticity; imitations are much less costly.
· Natural fibers are more expensive than synthetic.
· Hand-made, hand-woven, and hand-knotted rugs made by weavers are more durable and much more expensive than machine woven and knotted.
· The number of knots per square inch indicates its quality, and a higher number means a higher cost.
· Very intricate and rare designs are the most expensive.
· The country or area of origin affects the price.

Ceramic Tile brings a texture, richness and color to a room that Linoleum has yet to truly mimic. Tile floors can be installed in any room, however they are most frequently seen in Bathrooms and Kitchens. I particularly like them in entryways, where they serve as a transition point from the outside to large carpeted or hardwood floored rooms. They make for easy clean up and are impervious to water damage.
Tile Types
Ceramic tiles come in two basic types. Glazed and Porcelain. Glazed holds up the best for heavy traffic areas and porcelain works well in bathrooms. Porcelain is typically more expensive, so consider your budget and the size of the area you want to tile. Tiles also come in many shapes and sizes. For flooring, however, I would suggest using larger tiles up to 12” x 12”.
Underlayment
For proper installation the base foundation or the underlayment is critical. Typically it consists of ¾” to 1 ¼” of plywood. Tiling over Linoleum or existing tile is also feasible, as long as it is solid. I also recommend when Tiling over Linoleum that you first apply ring nails or screws 6” on center over the entire area. Tiles can also be installed directly over Concrete. Make sure in all cases that the floor is level and free of dust and debris prior to installation. There are leveling compounds that you can apply before applying tile if necessary.
Preparing the Site
Before actually installing the tile, it is best to lay it out in the room to see how it will look. Pay close attention to how it runs out toward the walls, in the corners and next to cabinets, tubs and toilets. The trick is to lay the tile out such that stubby tiles do not show up in highly visible spots. Once you have completed this, make two marks with a pencil outlining the most centered tile. These lines should be perpendicular to each other. Also take note of the wall that is most visible from all the others. Now remove the tiles. Next draw or snap a line perpendicular to this wall that is in line with one of the marks you made on the floor.
Then, draw a perpendicular line to this first line. This second line should be centered with the first line and fairly in line with the second mark you made on the floor. Once you have completed this task, re-layout some of the tiles along the perpendicular lines and observe if they run out in a way that will limit cutting and stubbed tiles. Once this is completed, remove the tiles and prepare for the actual installation.
Installing the Tile
Again, make sure the area is free of dirt and dust. Next apply the ceramic adhesive or mastic to the flooring, starting in the center, where the two perpendicular reference lines intersect. Apply enough material to cover 6-10 square feet, if no cuts are required. If cuts are required limit the amount of mastic application to about 2-4 square feet. When applying the mastic, first spread it with the flat end of the trowel. Lay it on relatively thick, approximately 1/8” to 3/16”thick. Then turn the trowel around and run the notched edge over it. This creates ridges in the mastic that helps to hold the tile down more securely. The larger the tile, the larger the notches should be. For example, I use a ¼” notched trowel for 12” x 12” tiles.
Note: Only make up enough ceramic adhesive for 30 minutes, as this material has the tendency to harden up rather quickly.
Once the adhesive has been applied, begin installing the tiles working from the center outward. On larger tiles you should back butter them. Basically, apply a thin coating of mastic to the back of the tile prior to laying it on the floor. This will help ensure a good bond.
As you near the walls or edges of cabinets, tubs and toilets, you will need to cut some of the tiles. I highly recommend the use of a Wet-Saw. A Wet-Saw will allow you to make very accurate cuts, both large and small. You will also save money, as you will waste many fewer tiles with bad cuts or broken tiles. Wet-Saws are not that expensive and once you see your finished product you will certainly be installing more tile. Wet-Saws can also be rented as a cheaper alternative.
When applying Tiles, you may want to use Lugs. Lugs are effectively spacers that come in various thicknesses. I typically like to have no more than a ¼” space between the tiles. Employing Spacers will ensure uniformity with your tile spacing.
Grouting
After the Tile has been completely installed, allow it to sit for 24-48 hours before applying grout and walking on it. Grout comes in many different colors and is very easy to install. Simply mix the grout with water or a special bonding agent and apply with a rubber trowel. Run the trowel on a bias when going over tile corners.
Once the grout has been applied, immediately wipe the tile of excess grout, using a wet sponge and a bucket of water. Wait 30 minutes and again wipe the tiles down of any residual grout. Wait another 60 minutes and repeat. If grout is left on the tiles to dry, you will have a great deal of elbow work scraping it off.
Let the grout sit up for 24 hours and it is ready for use and admiration.

TodayÂ’s laminate flooring materials are amazingly easy to install, highly durable and low maintenance in care. They can withstand the wear and tear of feet & things being dragged across their surface, are resistant to most spillage, burns and stains. They are the ideal flooring materials for the 21st century hectic lifestyle.
Stone, tile and hardwood visuals – they all make the decision to select an interesting and difficult process. This is due in part to the vast array of quality designs available.
And now, comes the question: Should you pick glued or click laminate flooring?
Glued installation has long been the standard in laminate flooring. The basic procedure consists of clamping the boards together, so that the excess glue is squeezed out. When you see glue squeezed out, you know you are installing correctly. Glue seeping out is necessary to ensure there are no small gaps that develop between the boards which later on will allow moisture to slip between.
Depending on the manufacturer, glue may be applied to certain portions of the board, only on the groove, tongue, or both spaces.
A buying tip - use the laminate flooring manufacturersÂ’ glue, otherwise your floorÂ’s warranty is void.
Click laminate flooring on the other hand, works on the locking system principle where each plank locks, hooks, or snaps the tongue and the groove to another to install the floor in place. ItÂ’s easy enough to do, as long as you take time to carefully read and follow the instructions.
You might want to consider the value found in installing click laminate flooring if:
You are new at installing flooring material.
Plan to use the flooring for small spaces.
DonÂ’t have a budget for a professional installer or have the time to install it yourself.
Have the need to immediately use the area for walking.
With glued laminate flooring, youÂ’ll need to partition off the area to allow the glue time to harden, which depending on the manufacturerÂ’s glue can between 12-30 hours before the floor can be used.
Another consideration for installation of glued laminate flooring requires that the installer use straps so the joints remain tight. The installer will also have to constantly check that the design is straight and that the planks remain in the correct position until they have dried.
With the click laminate flooringÂ’s locking system on the other hand, youÂ’ll immediately know if youÂ’ve locked it incorrectly. This is because the planks wonÂ’t come together nice and cleanly. The locking system eliminates the need to constantly check if you are installing a crooked design or that youÂ’ll create gaps where moisture or spillage can seep through. Nor will you need to use straps.
A tip to a better locking system is to consider manufacturers who offer click laminate flooring materials that have a tolerance of 1/10,000 of an inch, per plank.
What about maintenance and repair?
The better laminate flooring systems, whether glued or click, use superior technology that coats the planks, so that moisture doesnÂ’t seep into the core. You can expect repairs to be minimal.
However, when the time to repair does happen, expect to spend more when it comes to repairing glued laminate flooring. Especially if you donÂ’t have a router bit. This piece of equipment is used to cut out the damaged portion, to create new tongues and grooves.
If you are experienced with replacing damaged planks, then it wonÂ’t be a problem, but what if the plank is crooked, or incorrectly cut? Repetition will cost you more.
Paying a professional installer makes more sense. However, be prepared to pay upwards of $200.00 and more for the job.
With click laminate flooring, all you need to do is identify the damaged planks, unlock these from the rest, replace and then reinstall. ItÂ’s as easy to repair as it is to maintain.
A final appealing option to consider with no-glue laminate flooring. You can simply uninstall the floor and bring it with you to your next home.
So which way should you go? Glued or click laminate flooring material?
Consider these three concerns as a gauge to buying.
WhatÂ’s your lifestyle? And can your budget accommodate the added expense of a professional installer?
Is the design you like found in both formulations? Look around because there are many more manufacturers now which offer the same design in glued or click floor materials.
While a wise buyer considers pricing to be important, it isnÂ’t the over riding concern. Laminate flooring materials will show the cumulative effects of scratching. So select a product which offers a warranty of up to 15 years, scratch free life.
And youÂ’ll enjoy the appeal and value of low-maintenance laminate flooring throughout your home. Whether it be glued or click.
