Hardwood Floors are beautiful to look at and expensive to install. But keeping them clean is not necessarily the easiest thing to do. Growing up in a house with hardwood floors, I know how hard it was for my Mom to keep the floors shiny, especially with four kids. With two boys and two girls constantly running in and out of the house with various forms of the “outside world” caked to our shoes, I believe my Mom finally just gave up. If she had followed even the basic rules for keeping a hardwood floor clean with the four of us tracking Mother Nature in on a daily basis, she wouldn’t have had time for anything else.

Dirt and dust is your hardwood floor’s worst enemy. Though microscopic in size, the minute granules scratch your hardwood floor’s finish and over time transforms your mirror-finished floor into a floor more reminiscent of the floors of the log cabins inhabited long ago by our ancestors. Following are some tips to keep your investment shiny and new for years to come.

Though there are many manufacturers of hardwood floors to choose from, and they all have their own rules for keeping your floor clean and grit-free, there are some basic rules you can follow to keep your floors looking good.

For surface finishes:

Always use the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning products. If the manufacturer is not known, use a generic cleaning hardwood floor cleaner.

When little Junior spills his soda on a daily basis, wipe it up immediately with a damp cloth.

For stubborn stains, lightly dampen a cloth with the manufacturer’s recommended cleaner and apply directly to the stain. Do not use petroleum-based cleaners on water-based finishes.

And when the floor loses its luster and shine, it’s time to recoat. Unless you yourself are a professional floor cleaner, hire someone.

For wax finishes:

Dry mop regularly with an untreated dust mop. Vacuum, sweep or dust mop regularly to remove grit from the floor.

Junior can spill his soda on waxed floor as easily as he can on a surface finish. Follow the same instructions.

To remove water spots, use a fine steel wool and a small amount of mineral spirits.

Floors should be cleaned, stripped and rewaxed once or twice a year depending on traffic.

Preventative maintenance for all finishes:

Floor protective pads on the bottoms of furniture. Scatter rugs at entrances will help trap the grit from shoes that is your hardwood floor’s worst enemy. Sweep, vacuum or dust mop both the floor and rugs on a regular basis.

To put it simply, cleaning hardwood floors is not rocket science. It just requires a little effort on the consumer’s part. Dirt, grime and dust, though small and almost naked to the human eye in most cases, are your hardwood floor’s worst enemy. Keep these enemies of your floor cleaned on a regular basis and you will enjoy a lustrous, shiny floor for years to come.

Laminate Flooring - Laminate Flooring - An Easy to Follow Fitting Guide

Today’s Feature Article. "Laminate Flooring - An Easy to Follow Fitting Guide" was chosen only after one of editorial staff read over it and considered it suitable for our blog. We hope you find this information useful.

Please contact us if you feel that there is anything within todays article that is inaccurate or misleading. Please use the following reference: "Laminate Flooring - An Easy to Follow Fitting Guide".

Laminate Flooring is easy to fit, so long as you follow the simple basic guidelines. With nearly all laminate flooring having a click system in one form or another, it has never been easier or quicker to install the floor of your dreams. As with everything the key is preparation and having the correct tools for the job.

You should have already purchased your products, so you should have:

Laminate flooring, underlay, damp proof membrane, door profiles, scotia or beading

The product should be stored unopened in the room for 48 hours prior to installation. This allows the products time to acclimatize.

Here’s a list of the tools you will need.

Pencil, tape measure, fitting kit (which should include knocking block, pulling bar, spacer wedges), hand saw, jigsaw and a mitre block for the beading

Preparation

At any doors you may have in the room you will want to check if they are going to need to be planed. Take a piece of underlay and also one of the laminate flooring boards. Place one on top of the other on the floor nest to the door and make a pencil mark along the bottom of the door. This is how much you will have to plane of the door. Now take the door off for re-hanging later. Now place the underlay and laminate against any architraves you have. Take a hand saw, using the laminate and underlay as a guide and cut the bottom of the architraves out. This will enable you to fit the laminate flooring under the architraves and you will get a much neater finish. Alternatively instead of doing this you can just use a filling compound.

The surface of the sub-floor onto which the laminate floor is going needs to be level and clean. Make sure any old flooring coverings are removed and check for things like nails etc. After you have done this you need to give the floor a good sweep, it’s best to use a soft headed brush. Now the floor is nice and clean you can start. If you have a concrete sub-floor you will 1st need to put down a damp proof membrane (sometimes this comes built in with the underlay). Just roll out the sheet making sure any joints are overlapped and sealed with a water proof tape. The damp proof membrane should be allowed to rise up the walls 10mm. Now you can roll out the underlay. Where the two edges of the underlay meet, the edges must fit against each other flush and be taped to stop any movement. Where the underlay meets the walls, you should allow the underlay to creep up the wall about 10mm.

Let’s start laying the floor.

It is best to start along the longest, straightest wall. Cut the tongue of one of the laminate flooring boards and lay this edge against the wall, using the spacers to create a 10mm expansion gap. Continue to do this using the knocking block to get the joint’s tight, until you get to the last board of that row which will need to be cut to fit. Now you will need to measure the distance between the last board you laid and the wall. Once you have done this take off 10mm to allow for the expansion gap and us the measurement to cut the final board for that row. You will need to use the pulling bar to get the last board to fit tightly. To start the second row you will need to cut the laminate flooring board 2/3 of its length. (In other words if the board is 1200mm long you will need to cut of 800mm of the board.) Then use the 400mm long piece that is left to start your second row. This will give you staggered joints as required by the manufactures guild lines. Now you can continue to lay the laminate flooring using the knocking block to get the joints nice and tight.

Start row three with a laminate flooring board that is cut 1/3 from the end of the board. Then continue in the same manner as the preceding rows. Making sure the end joints are staggered. When you come to the last row, once again measure the gap between the laminate flooring board and the wall, cut the board making sure you have taken off 10mm for expansion. Then use the pulling bar to fit the last boards in place.

When you have fitted all of the Laminate flooring you can remover the spacer wedges.

Finishing Touches

Now you can fit any door profiles you may have. Simply measure between the door frame and cut the profile so it fits in nice and tight. Please remember if you are nailing or drilling the profiles down ensure that you have no water or gas pipes directly under where you are fixing.

If you are using beading to cover the expansion gap around the perimeter of the flooring it is usually best to tack this on with panel pins or similar small nails. In corners where two pieces of beading meet you must us a mitre block and mitre the corners to ensure a nice tidy fit.. To get a really professional finish in places where the beading just ends use a reverse mitre, returning the beading back into the skirting board.

Oriental Rugs - Add Beauty and Elegance to Your home with Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs can be purchased in a great variety of colors and patterns, and will add beauty and elegance to your home décor. When you decide to decorate a room, consider choosing one or more of these exciting and durable area rugs as a cornerstone for your color and design choices. If you are adding a rug to an existing decorating plan, you will have no trouble finding one that complements the choices already made. Although oriental rugs are found most often in living rooms and dining rooms, they are also a popular choice as runners for high traffic areas, for foyers, and even for bedrooms. Your home decorating scheme can include them throughout the interior of your house if you really love them.

What is an Oriental Rug?

When the term "oriental" is used in reference to rugs, it means those rugs produced anywhere on the continent of Asia, and includes:

• Persian rugs – made in Iran (formerly Persia), the country that produces more handmade rugs than all other rug-making countries combined, and are considered by many to be the finest

• Afghanistan rugs – still woven mainly by nomadic tribes

• Indian rugs – mostly imitation of Persian designs, but of coarser wool

• Pakistan rugs – from the country that is the fourth largest rug producer in the world

• Caucasian rugs – from the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and characterized by bright red, rust, or burgundy colors, bold geometric designs, and narrow borders

• Rugs from Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, Tibet, and a host of other Asian countries

Each country produces its own distinct style and quality of rug, although many are imitations of Persian designs, as well as modern Tibetan and Indo-Persian designs. Making rugs by hand is an ancient art, and the designs reflect the religious and ethnic structures found in the history of the countries of origin. These designs are still produced today, sometimes by hand and sometimes within a modern rug-weaving industry. The common patterns are traditional floral or garden motifs, often with a central medallion, or a geometric or curvilinear design, or central scenes that look like paintings.

How to Choose Oriental Rugs for Your Home

To decorate with oriental rugs, it is important to take both color and design into consideration. The color should be harmonious with the other colors in the room in which the rug is to be placed and should repeat the dominant or accent colors, or include shades of one or more of them. If the colors are compatible with other colors in the room, even a modern home can be enhanced by the popular traditional designs in oriental rugs.

When choosing an appropriate design, consider how you are going to use the rug. If the center of the rug is going to be very visible, a medallion or central motif or scene is a happy choice. If, however, the center of the rug is going to be under a dining room table or under a bed, it would be better to chose one with a repetitive design or one where the most detail and interest is in the borders.

As well, very colorful rugs with very busy designs can bring a subdued room to life; simple designs and a limited color palette are better in a room that is already colorful and busy. Geometric designs work best in new or modern homes, and curvilinear designs are more appropriate for old and traditional homes. It is most important that the rug does not clash, in either color or pattern, with any other fabric in the room in which it is to be used.

How to Find a Good Buy

A reputable dealer or outlet will give you the "good buy" oriental rug for which you are shopping. Before you go to the store, give some serious thought to the color, design and size of rug you need, and how much you are willing to pay. If you have clear ideas of what you want and have made some decisions beforehand, it will reduce the dizzying number of choices facing you when you have to make your selection.

An antique oriental rug is the most expensive rug, of course, and even if cost is not an issue, authenticity is. Documentation for an antique rug, including the appraised value, is sometimes available, but if not, you can ask for an independent appraisal or a guarantee if you don’t know the dealer.

Most people, however, are not buying an antique, and are simply interested in choosing a beautiful rug and getting good value for their money. It is possible to find a discount oriental rug, or a wholesale buy if you shop around. Whether the carpet is cheap or expensive from your point of view, it is important that you understand the factors that affect the cost.

These are:

• Natural or synthetic fibers

• Method of production – handmade or machine woven

• Intricacy and rarity of design

• Region of origin

Wool is the most expensive fabric, but it is warm, durable, dirt-resistant, fire-resistant, and easy to clean, and has become the standard by which all rugs are judged. Other natural materials used in oriental rugs are cotton and silk, and blends of wool and silk. These materials are more durable than synthetics and never release chemical gases into the air, which is significant to people with health concerns. If you are looking for a less expensive rug, synthetic fibers rather than natural are the answer.

The knots per square inch (kpsi) in an oriental rug is a good indication of its quality, and a high number of knots is usually an indication of durability as well as higher cost.

Expect slight inconsistencies and at least one imperfection in a hand-woven rug originating from a country in the Middle East. The philosophy, from an Islamic point of view, is that only God is perfect, and, therefore, nothing man makes should be perfect. A flaw will be carefully woven into each rug.

"Handmade" means that the rug has been constructed by hand, but it does not necessarily mean that it has been hand-knotted. "Hand-hooked" means the yarn has been inserted into a backing with a hand-held tool. Handmade, hand-knotted rugs are superior in quality to those made by machine made because a rug is more durable when each knot has been individually tightened. Expect to pay more for them.

You can beautify your home with oriental rugs if you give some careful thought to the colors and designs that will work best with your style preferences. By taking time to shop around and make sure that you are buying a quality rug from a reputable dealer, you will be able to enjoy your beautiful rugs for many happy years.

Tile Floor - Flooring: Installing Ceramic Tile

Here’s today’s article - enjoy!. "Flooring: Installing Ceramic Tile" has been reviewed by our editorial staff to ensure that it is appropriate for this blog. We hope you enjoy it.

Here’s the legal stuff: - we cannot guarantee the 100% accuracy of it’s contents. Similar articles on "tile floor" can be viewed by going to the articles category page.

Please contact us if you feel that there is anything within todays article that is inaccurate or misleading. Here is the reference for your use: "Flooring: Installing Ceramic Tile".

Ceramic Tile brings a texture, richness and color to a room that Linoleum has yet to truly mimic. Tile floors can be installed in any room, however they are most frequently seen in Bathrooms and Kitchens. I particularly like them in entryways, where they serve as a transition point from the outside to large carpeted or hardwood floored rooms. They make for easy clean up and are impervious to water damage.

Tile Types

Ceramic tiles come in two basic types. Glazed and Porcelain. Glazed holds up the best for heavy traffic areas and porcelain works well in bathrooms. Porcelain is typically more expensive, so consider your budget and the size of the area you want to tile. Tiles also come in many shapes and sizes. For flooring, however, I would suggest using larger tiles up to 12” x 12”.

Underlayment

For proper installation the base foundation or the underlayment is critical. Typically it consists of ¾” to 1 ¼” of plywood. Tiling over Linoleum or existing tile is also feasible, as long as it is solid. I also recommend when Tiling over Linoleum that you first apply ring nails or screws 6” on center over the entire area. Tiles can also be installed directly over Concrete. Make sure in all cases that the floor is level and free of dust and debris prior to installation. There are leveling compounds that you can apply before applying tile if necessary.

Preparing the Site

Before actually installing the tile, it is best to lay it out in the room to see how it will look. Pay close attention to how it runs out toward the walls, in the corners and next to cabinets, tubs and toilets. The trick is to lay the tile out such that stubby tiles do not show up in highly visible spots. Once you have completed this, make two marks with a pencil outlining the most centered tile. These lines should be perpendicular to each other. Also take note of the wall that is most visible from all the others. Now remove the tiles. Next draw or snap a line perpendicular to this wall that is in line with one of the marks you made on the floor.

Then, draw a perpendicular line to this first line. This second line should be centered with the first line and fairly in line with the second mark you made on the floor. Once you have completed this task, re-layout some of the tiles along the perpendicular lines and observe if they run out in a way that will limit cutting and stubbed tiles. Once this is completed, remove the tiles and prepare for the actual installation.

Installing the Tile

Again, make sure the area is free of dirt and dust. Next apply the ceramic adhesive or mastic to the flooring, starting in the center, where the two perpendicular reference lines intersect. Apply enough material to cover 6-10 square feet, if no cuts are required. If cuts are required limit the amount of mastic application to about 2-4 square feet. When applying the mastic, first spread it with the flat end of the trowel. Lay it on relatively thick, approximately 1/8” to 3/16”thick. Then turn the trowel around and run the notched edge over it. This creates ridges in the mastic that helps to hold the tile down more securely. The larger the tile, the larger the notches should be. For example, I use a ¼” notched trowel for 12” x 12” tiles.

Note: Only make up enough ceramic adhesive for 30 minutes, as this material has the tendency to harden up rather quickly.

Once the adhesive has been applied, begin installing the tiles working from the center outward. On larger tiles you should back butter them. Basically, apply a thin coating of mastic to the back of the tile prior to laying it on the floor. This will help ensure a good bond.

As you near the walls or edges of cabinets, tubs and toilets, you will need to cut some of the tiles. I highly recommend the use of a Wet-Saw. A Wet-Saw will allow you to make very accurate cuts, both large and small. You will also save money, as you will waste many fewer tiles with bad cuts or broken tiles. Wet-Saws are not that expensive and once you see your finished product you will certainly be installing more tile. Wet-Saws can also be rented as a cheaper alternative.

When applying Tiles, you may want to use Lugs. Lugs are effectively spacers that come in various thicknesses. I typically like to have no more than a ¼” space between the tiles. Employing Spacers will ensure uniformity with your tile spacing.

Grouting

After the Tile has been completely installed, allow it to sit for 24-48 hours before applying grout and walking on it. Grout comes in many different colors and is very easy to install. Simply mix the grout with water or a special bonding agent and apply with a rubber trowel. Run the trowel on a bias when going over tile corners.

Once the grout has been applied, immediately wipe the tile of excess grout, using a wet sponge and a bucket of water. Wait 30 minutes and again wipe the tiles down of any residual grout. Wait another 60 minutes and repeat. If grout is left on the tiles to dry, you will have a great deal of elbow work scraping it off.

Let the grout sit up for 24 hours and it is ready for use and admiration.

Wood Floors - Remodeling Your Home: How Much Is Too Much?

Here is today’s feature article - Happy reading!. "Remodeling Your Home: How Much Is Too Much?" was chosen only after one of editorial staff read over it and considered it suitable for our blog. We hope you find its contents enjoyable.

Here’s the legal stuff: - we cannot guarantee the 100% accuracy of it’s contents. Related articles on "wood floors" can be viewed by going to the articles category page.

Feel free to contact us if you feel that there is content in todays article that could be found inaccurate or misleading. Please use the following reference: "Remodeling Your Home: How Much Is Too Much?".

The classic way for homeowners to increase the value of their house is by remodeling existing rooms or adding on to its current plan.

Some choose to build recreation rooms and studies while others add new appliances, fixtures and cabinets to enliven rooms and make their home more attractive to future buyers.

But, when should you decide to stop sinking money into a home and buy a bigger place? And how much rehab is too much when it comes time to recovering remodeling costs through a home sale

For instance, if you’ve just spent $1,000 remodeling your living room and didn’t expand your small bathroom, the chances of increasing the number of interested buyers are slim.

With these concerns in mind, I can offer a few tips for those struggling to add value to their home.

First, always protect the character of your home. Nothing sticks out more than a new addition that is in a completely different architectural style. Be consistent. Recognize your home’s character and stay within its framework.

The most financially rewarding areas to remodel are usually the kitchen and bath. Newly re-done cooking spaces and cabinets can attract more buyers and may command a slightly higher price for the home than a comparable one on the market. Simple repairs that are made to last will bring you the biggest returns upon sale.

Enlarged bathrooms are the most popular attraction for new home buyers, according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Today, the most popular additions for younger buyers are sunken whirlpool baths and showers. But be sure to install modest, solid amenities. It’s easy to quickly over-spend on bathroom fixtures.

Buyers are, by convention, more interested in above-ground living space – not basements, yards and walkways. Swimming pools can be a poor investment if installed for the sole purpose of increasing a home’s value; it’s rare that a pool’s cost will be recovered in a home sale. It can also be a negative feature for potential buyers with very young children.

Replacing worn carpeting, tiles and wood floors can give your home an immediate advantage over similar properties in the area. Updating paint colors in all areas of your home can also prove beneficial.

However, it’s recommended that you use neutral colors, such as gray, beige and off-white when adding new floor and wall coverings. Fewer buyers will then turn away because of differing tastes.

Stay simple with your remodeling and look at your home as though you were the buyer. Chances are that if you find the upstairs bedroom could be brightened by a larger window, potential buyers will probably feel the same.

Don’t go overboard. Concentrate on improving two or three deficiencies in your home. More than likely, the time and money you spend adding quality to your home will be rewarded with greater profit at selling time.

Oriental Rug - You Can't Beat Oriental Rugs For Elegance

Today’s Feature Article. "You Can't Beat Oriental Rugs For Elegance" was chosen only after one of editorial staff read over it and considered it suitable for our blog. We hope you find this information useful.

Oriental rugs will add timeless beauty to your home, will coordinate with any décor, and enhance any room, hallway, or entrance. They are also a favorite option when decorating home offices, and are a particularly good choice for high traffic areas because of the intricacies of their designs, which hide wear and tear. The term "oriental" refers to rugs produced on the continent of Asia, such as Persian (from Iran), Indian, Chinese, and Turkish rugs. Imitations of the popular oriental patterns are also available and produced by manufacturers such as Nourison in the USA, and Sphinx, also in the USA but with its parent company in Egypt.

Making rugs by hand is an ancient art and the old designs reflect the religious and ethnic structures of the times in the countries or areas of origin. Many of these ancient designs are still produced today, sometimes hand-woven and hand-knotted, other times woven by machine. The most traditional patterns are those with a floral or garden motif, or geometric or curvilinear designs around a central medallion or a central painting-like scene. Oriental rugs used to be constructed only with such natural fibers as wool, cotton, silk, or goat and camel hair, or blends of these materials, but now you can find them made with less expensive synthetic materials such as olefin (polypropylene), nylon, polyester, and acrylic. Wool rugs remain the first choice in durable, soft, dirt-and-fire resistant, warm rugs, but synthetic reproductions make oriental area rugs more affordable. They come in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes – round, oval, rectangular, and, of course, the popular runner.

How to Choose Oriental Rugs for Your Home
Decide on how you are going to use each area rug. Is it going to define furniture groupings or unify all the elements in the room? Is its primary use to protect a floor or a carpet? Is its prime function to add warmth and comfort? The use of the rug will dictate its size and shape. As well, you should keep these points in mind:
· The colors should be harmonious with other colors in the room.
· If the center of the carpet will be visible, medallions or central scenes are good choices, but if the center will be fully or partially hidden under a table or other furniture, it is better to go with a repetitive design or an elaborate and interesting border.
· A family with health problems will appreciate rugs with natural fibers since they have the advantage of not releasing chemicals into the air as synthetics do.
· Very colorful and busy designs can make an oriental rug the focal point in a room, but if the room is already colorful with intricate drapery and upholstery fabric designs, choose simple designs and subtle colors.
· If you are going to use two different rugs in one room, make sure the colors and patterns blend and complement each other.

Important Cost Considerations
It is not as difficult as you may think to find good quality, cheap area rugs with oriental designs. When you shop online, you deal directly with online retailers who can offer discount and warehouse prices because there are no storefront costs and no middlemen to pay. As well as shopping online, here are other considerations that can make the oriental rug of your dreams affordable:
· An antique rug is the most expensive and should have documentation attesting to its authenticity; imitations are much less costly.
· Natural fibers are more expensive than synthetic.
· Hand-made, hand-woven, and hand-knotted rugs made by weavers are more durable and much more expensive than machine woven and knotted.
· The number of knots per square inch indicates its quality, and a higher number means a higher cost.
· Very intricate and rare designs are the most expensive.
· The country or area of origin affects the price.

Whether you spring for a genuine antique oriental wool rug that has been hand woven and hand knotted in Iran, or you choose a polypropylene machine woven rug with an oriental design manufactured in North America, you will be adding beauty, warmth and comfort to your home. Enjoy!

Laminate Floors - Why Four Out of Five Asthma Sufferers Choose Laminate Floors

Here is today’s feature article - Happy reading!. "Why Four Out of Five Asthma Sufferers Choose Laminate Floors" was chosen only after one of editorial staff read over it and considered it suitable for our blog. We hope you find its contents enjoyable.

If you intend to buy laminate flooring for your house there are a few things you should consider first. For example, what if you have natural maple cabinets/bookshelves/etc. all through your house and now you want to put in laminate flooring. What would be best then; stay with the natural maple for the flooring or go with a cherry that has more contrast?

Most people have a tendency to recommend a contrast when it comes to flooring. The white sap wood in American Cherry would certainly be complimentary to the natural maple cabinets. It is a beautiful wood, but notes that it is very soft and tends to ding and dent easily. Hickory is a fun wood if you like a more rustic look, and it is very hard and dense like maple. Its white sap wood contrasts with the deep, rich, reds and browns of the heart wood. Or, you can select the unparalleled most wanted oak with a warm stain for contrast.

Or you could consider going more along the lines of a darker stain. Contrasting maple with a dark tone is striking and may be the design statement you're looking for; i.e., Chestnut, Dark Walnut, and Ebony.

In addition to selecting a flooring that will compliment your cabinets/bookshelves, etc. also be thinking about how it will work with the actual colours that you'll be using for upholstery, drapery, wall paint, etc. particularly if you're thinking of using burgundy’s, reds, rusts, browns, gold’s, etc. the yellow and/or reddish tones in wood can get rather tricky.

Tile Floor - Cork Tile Flooring

Cork tile flooring is similar to floorboard but with additional benefits such as insulation against noise and temperature. Cork tile flooring is considered the perfect flooring solution because it is easy to maintain, pleasing to the eye, comfortable to walk on, soft and warm, keeps the noise out, insulates against temperature, and yet is rough and tough.

Cork tile flooring comes in a variety of hues from natural browns and beiges to greens, reds, and even black. These multi-faceted tiles come with their own unique speckles and whorls and blend in easily with the décor, no matter what the type.

Cork tile flooring was used in the old times but is now making a major reappearance not only because it is fashionable, but also because it is an environmentally friendly product that doesn’t require the cutting of trees. The bark is harvested once every nine years in accordance with strict harvesting standards, giving the trees time to regenerate themselves, when they will be ready for harvest again.

Cork tile flooring has all the benefits of natural cork products: resilient, anti-static, sound absorbing, water resistant, insulating, and anti-allergenic.

Cork tiles can be used in any room of the house or office. They are a favorite choice in sound recording studios because they support acoustical excellence and prevent an echo. Cork tile flooring is also resistant to friction and, therefore, long lasting; it provides the soft underfoot and insulation against heat and cold. The flooring is capable of “impact sound reduction” and “sound transmission reduction”. Cork floor tiles are priced in the same range as hardwood.

There are two types of tiles in popular usage these days. One is the “glue down” tile, which is the standard type, usually twelve square inches and four millimeters thick. They are available is bigger sizes, with or without beveled edges and in an array of shapes to chose from.

The second type of cork floor plan is the “floating cork floor plank”. These tiles are similar to laminated wood flooring planks. The former consists of a cork base that is typically two millimeters thick, MDF fiberboard at the core and a three-millimeter cork surface layer in a range of patterns. These tiles are bought pre-finished with three coats of UV-protected polyurethane. The installation procedure is the same as that of a laminate floor. The choice of glue used in the installation is of utmost importance. Cork tiles expand and contract with changes in humidity. The soft and flexible nature of cork does not require a flexible adhesive, but a strong one, which will ensure that a permanent bond is created.

Cork Flooring provides detailed information on Cork Flooring, Natural Cork Flooring, Cork Tile Flooring, Discount Cork Flooring and more. Cork Flooring is affiliated with Hard Wood Flooring.

Oriental Rugs - Area Rugs and Flooring — Two Newly Green Giants

Today’s Feature Article. "Area Rugs and Flooring — Two Newly Green Giants" was posted only after being thoroughly reviewed by one of our editorial staff who considered it suitable for our blog. We hope you find its contents enjoyable.

Over the years, a debate has taken place in the flooring industry over the impact its products have on the environment. In 2003, a group of industry researches and technical specialists met at the University of North Carolina to examine the science with regard to the positive or negative attributes of materials found in products like carpeting, area rugs and linoleum.

The panel looked at hundreds of studies in relation to how carpet and non-carpet materials contribute to environmental quality and whether there's a significant concern with toxic substances and allergens alleged to have commonly been found.

The intention of the researchers was to try and settle years of anecdotal evidence and set an industry standard to help buyers and sellers of flooring products. A good portion of the information reviewed came from the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Health Science Libraries, and other previously published industry experts.

A review of all of the literature led to one major conclusion: materials found in flooring "play a significant role to the quality of life indoors." It contributes to healthy design factors, safety, aesthetics, climate control, ergonomics and physical comfort. When maintained properly, carpeting and area rugs are not at all risks to public health.

While the group's conclusion was great news for the industry and the public, it's still necessary to examine flooring's impact on the whole environment, including the part played by rugs and flooring made from natural materials.

Decorating Like Darwin: By Natural Selection

With so many types of area rugs available today, it's hard enough to make a style selection, let alone having to take health and environmental concerns into account. Keeping rugs clean and in good condition will go a long way in alleviating any concerns. Area rugs do have material differences, though. Here's a quick look at natural fiber rugs and other natural flooring:

WOOL RUGS

Water, water everywhere, so keep it away from wool. Water is one of the biggest enemies of wool rugs. Wool, popular in http://www.a1-discount-area-rugs.com/Oriental-Rugs.html Oriental rugs, has a high moisture regain and is susceptible to microorganism attack. That may sound like the bad plot to a Hollywood horror film or an episode of Fear Factor. Nevertheless, keep something that requires water, like potted plants, off of wool rugs.

Water aside, wool's long, coarse fibers have the ability to maintain indoor air quality and, unlike synthetic fibers, can absorb indoor contaminants. Since discarded carpet accounts for a tremendous amount of waste – 4.7 billion pounds in 2002 according to the EPA – any rug that lasts longer, like a hand-knotted wool rug, is going to get the seal of approval from the Green Party.

JUTE RUGS

Once used primarily as carpet backing, Jute has made it to the big time. As a full-fledged member of the area rug and carpet family, Jute, which ranges from light tans to browns, is one of the finest and softest of natural floor covering materials.

Composed mainly of plant materials, Jute is a rainy season crop that grows best in warm, humid climates like parts of China and India. While it may grow in rainy weather, the Jute rug won't stand up to areas with high moisture levels. Unlike wool, jute is resistant to microorganisms, but the material will in fact deteriorate rapidly when exposed to moisture.

BAMBOO RUGS

Gilligan's Island no longer corners the market on bamboo flooring. You don't need to live in a hut to use this material.

Bamboo, which is also a trend in cutting boards and hardwood floors, has become a popular option for area rugs. And its environmental friendliness is obvious. No trees to cut down, no waste. Bamboo is technically a grass, and moreover a highly renewable resource. Maturing in less than six years, bamboo is harvested over and over from the same plants. Its strength combined with a natural beauty can add a contemporary touch to any living space.

SEAGRASS RUGS

Seagrass is not something you may have thought was illegal. You can't grow it in your backyard, but it does look great in the house. Created from tropical grass mainly imported from China, Seagrass, which only comes in a natural organic green color, is smooth to the touch and extremely durable and stain resistant.

SISAL RUGS

Sisal is another natural fiber that has recently gained popularity among designers. The material is derived from a cactus plant, grown in semi-arid regions liked Brazil and Africa.

Sisal is stronger and more durable than other natural fibers, making its staying power ultra-environment friendly. Water is not Sisal's friend, either. The rug should never be used in the bathroom or other moist areas of the house.

CORK FLOORING

Now you may be thinking how a rug is made from cork? Well, it's not. Cork has been slipped in to this discussion simply because it can be considered a cousin in the natural fiber family. Used as durable hardwood-type flooring, the cork tree is the only one whose bark can regenerate itself after harvest without damaging the tree or the environment. The tree is never killed or cut down and can produce bark for centuries. Furthermore, almost all of its harvested materials are put to use.

Cork is known for its sound environmental policy, and when feet hit the floor, it's known for its durability. Cork may seem elastic when compared to wood, but its "natural memory ability" and resistance to liquid penetration can make it an attractive alternative.

LINOLEUM FLOORING

This is no joke. Linoleum is back. So break out the disco ball and platform shoes. Vinyl nearly sent linoleum to the flooring scrap yard, but just like bell-bottoms, linoleum is making a comeback. It's contemporary and gets the green seal. While vinyl is synthetic and petroleum-based, linoleum is made entirely of natural materials, linseed oil being the main ingredient.

The resurgence of natural and retro products is behind linoleum's rebirth. As a natural product, linoleum can be recycled and is hypoallergenic, which benefits those who suffer from allergies or asthma. Linoleum also contains antibacterial properties that help stop the growth of microorganisms.

Oriental Rug - Oriental Rug Care - Making Your Investment Last

When you finally find the oriental rug you have dreamed of and purchase it, you obviously want the rug to last. You put it in your living room to be admired by friends and acquaintances. The worst thing that could happen is that your beautiful rug deteriorates with time because of lack of proper care.

Oriental rug care is something that you should consider early on in the life of the rug. If you are careful early on, the rug will look nice and only need a little care. If you let things slip and don't care for your rug, you will have to pay the price of repairs, professional cleaning, and permanent stains. Keeping a rug looking natural and beautiful is like maintaining a classic car. There small yet important things that you need to do periodically for your oriental rug.

Oriental Rug Care in a few simple steps.

The sun is actually one of the rugs worst enemies. Many times a rug is placed in a room with lots of natural light to bring out the colors and beauty of the rug and the rest of the room. Over time the sun can damage your rug beyond repair. The best solution to sun damage, which causes the rug to fade, is to remove the rug from direct sunlight. If you don't like that option, consider flipping the rug around from time to time to even out any wear on the colors from the sun. Make sure that if you are not using the area to keep the sun from shining directly on the rug.

Another unfortunate cause of damage is uneven wear. Uneven wear is where one part of the rug looks rather used while the other side looks perfectly new. This happens because of the traffic that goes over the rug. The people in the household walk over the same part of the rug over and over. Again like the sun damage issue this can be partially resolved by making sure the rug is flipped around every few months.

Vacuuming a rug can keep a rug lasting much longer because it takes away the deeper dirt that can tend wear a rug over time. Make sure that you vacuum both the front and the back of the rug. Vacuuming is not just about keeping the rug clean. When a rug is vacuumed, it allows weaving on the rug to straighten out. Be careful when you vacuum a rug though. Although it can be a preventative measure, it can cause alot of problems. Make sure that when you vacuum that you try to use a vacuum extension such as the hose. A vacuum which is made for thicker carpets can sometimes be too harsh on the rug because of the power brush. A hose is better for the rug. It is easier to maneuver especially if you have fringe on the rug. One of the worst things is to have your fringe twisted into your vacuum.

Using a rug pad can also extend the life of a rug. It might not be considered an absolute necessity but will help greatly. A pad can extend the life of the rug and once it is in place it does not really take any extra maintenance.
